THE Somerset Wyverns made the short trip down to Paignton to take on the Torbay Trojans in the second of their affiliation games on Saturday.

The Torbay Trojans are an established team already playing in the division that the Wyverns are hoping to join for 2018, so this game was always going to be a huge test.

However, the Wyverns came flying out of the blocks and, within a couple of minutes, scored a touchdown which they converted for two extra points, giving them an early 8-0 lead.

They kept the pressure up and repeated the feat in the second quarter, going in 16-0 up at half-time, but the Trojans stepped up their game after half-time and match fitness was beginning to show.

The Trojans opened the second-half scoring to make it 16-6 then, after a long period of defensive play, Matt Roberts caught an interception and ran in the Wyverns’ only points of the second-half.

That seemed to spark the Trojans into life again as, being 22-6 down, they made a change at quarterback and began a comeback, soon scoring another touchdown to make it 22-14.

The fourth quarter was a dramatic one and special mention must go to Trojans Offensive Lineman Richard Christian, who suffered a season ending injury with just a couple of minutes left on the clock.

Once he had been treated and helped from the field, the Trojans kept up the pressure and, with the final play of the game, scored another converted touchdown to level the score at 22-22.

It was a difficult week to pick the MVP due to a strong team performance, but eventually the coaches decided the award should go to Daniel Lewis, who wins a crate of beer courtesy of the club’s good friends at Exmoor Ales.

Next up, the Wyverns welcome the Welwyn Hatfield Mosquitos as they play their first home game at North Petherton Rugby Club on July 29. All spectators are welcome – the more, the merrier.

New players are still welcome (no experience, or even knowledge, necessary) to come down to training every Sunday at Victoria Park, Taunton

The Under-18s train at 10am and the adult team trains between 11.45am and 3pm.

Follow Somerset Wyverns on Facebook and @wyvernsafc on Twitter for the latest updates – the first three sessions are free and supporters and game day helpers are welcome as well.
