Burnham 156-1 beat Purnells 155 by 9 wkts

BURNHAM came away with a convincing win at home to fellow mid-table side Purnells on Saturday.

Purnells captain C. Redwood won the toss and elected to have a bat, but his side didn’t have things their own way as Pete Harris took 2-16 from nine overs, which allowed the change bowlers to bowl with freedom.

Mark Winton came into the attack and really started to spin the ball on what was quite a dusty wicket, and it wasn’t long before he claimed his first victim.

Carlson provided great support at the other end, ending with figures of 1-22 from nine overs.

But all the action came from Winton’s end after a great catch from A. Smith which led to another wicket on the consecutive ball; Winton’s hat-trick ball was knocked back for a dot ball.

Winton finished with 5-32 runs from his nine overs, which put Burnham firmly in the driving seat as Purnells were all out for 155.

Openers Harris and Dave Worthington got Burnham off to the start they needed and added more than 50 until Harris departed for 21, which brought captain Rob Driver to the crease.

There was no hanging around from the number three, who raced to an unbeaten 52, with Worthington 48 not out at the other end to complete a solid all-round performance from Burnham with both bat and ball.

Burnham will be looking to keep their momentum going this coming Saturday, as they travel to Weston-super-Mare 2nds.

Burnham go into Saturday’s match one place and five points ahead of their opponents, who beat Taunton 2nds last time out.
