TAUNTON Civil Service Hockey Club continue to enjoy great success in junior hockey within the county. 

On Saturday, at Wells Blue School, the Somerset Under-10s County Championships were staged.

Taunton CS Girls’ team played in the morning session, and were in outstanding form in each of their matches.

They were crowned County Champions after an unbeaten streak of four games which saw them beat Chard 5-0, Shepton Mallet 5-0, and Yeovil and Sherborne 2-0, as well as a goalless draw with Taunton Vale.

THE victorious Taunton Civil Service Under-10s Girls hockey team: Anu Balasubrimanium, Lucy Wakefield, Matilda Ruthven, Melissa Ture, Jasmine Porter, Greta Siakoufis, Sophie, Daisy Vann.

The Under-10s Boys also started strongly, winning their first three fixtures.

They were held by a strong Yeovil and Sherborne team, but in the final game against their local rivals Taunton Vale, they were once again able to play some great hockey, resulting in a steady 3-1 victory

As well as the victory over Vale, the team beat Cheddar Valley 2-0, Chard 1-0, Shepton Mallet 1-0 and shared the spoils with Yeovil and Sherborne after a 1-1 draw.

The results didn’t come as a surprise for this local club; they train each week from early September through until Easter each year, on a Wednesday evening, on the excellent double astro-turf facility at King’s College, Taunton. 

More than 150 juniors train at the club each week, with groups being led by England Hockey-qualified coaches, in an academy-style set-up. 

Taunton CS Hockey Club aren’t without other successes this season, as they also competed in the Under-14s County Girls tournaments where they were also crowned County Champions. 

In senior competition, two ladies teams in the Wessex Ladies leagues have put in strong performances.

The men’s 2nd team were crowned divisional winners three games before the end of the season, and the men’s 1sts go into their final couple of league games three points clear at the top of their respective league.

Taunton CS Hockey Club train each week on a Tuesday night for Under-14s and Under-16s girls and ladies, and on a Wednesday night for Under-8s, Under-10s, Under-12s Juniors and Under-14s, Under-16s Boys, followed by men’s.

The training facilities include a double floodlit astro-turf.
