YOUNG Bridgwater boxer Damian Nash put in an excellent display to defeat national champion Josh Brady at Sturminster Newton last weekend.

Nash, of King Alfred’s Boxing Club, was taking part in his 11th bout, and to add to the challenge Brady was the home favourite.

It turned out to be action-packed right from the first bell as Nash came out throwing heavy body shots and made it clear that Brady was going to struggle to cope with him.

Nash upped his work rate in the next two rounds with more powerful body shots and, though the champion started to land shots of his own, Nash was already in control of the fight.

After a cracking bout of three fantastic rounds in which 90 per cent of the shots were body shots, Nash came away with a unanimous victory.

This was a big step up for Nash and he showed everyone the level he can mix with, doing the club and himself very proud.

Also in action from King Alfred’s was William Marles, who was taking part in his second bout and was up against Brogen Cooney from Waterside.

Both boys got to work with good jabs in the first round, but Cooney began to put the pressure on in the second and third rounds and caught Marles with good jabs.

Marles took the shots and came back with his own combinations but ended up losing on points.

Despite his defeat, Marles kept going throughout and never gave up, and the corner men said it was a pleasure to be in his corner.

He was back in the gym by the Monday morning ready to prepare for his next bout.

For any potential boxers wishing to join the club, training nights are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
