THE random draw for Sunday’s Loxton Trophy at Brean Golf Club, made by the computer, served up some interesting pairings as it always seems to.

One of those pairings drawn was workmates Jeff Read and Dan Reason, and the duo subsequently raced away with the win.

They scored a spectacular nett 58 in the betterball medal to win by three on another bitterly cold morning at Brean.

The runners-up were Phil Hodgson and Steve Mason, with a nett 61, while Kevin Davies and Chris Fairchild finished third with their 62.

Mel Brown beat both the cold weather and the rest of the players who braved the chill to win Saturday’s Winter League round.

He scored 38 points in the freezing conditions to win by one from Gordy Wheelaghan.

Wheelaghan in turn edged Simon Baunton back into third spot on countback after they both carded 37 points.

Steve Bateman also notched 37 points, but missed out on a podium finish after the countback.

Baunton scored the only two of the day at the 14th, and collected the whole of the twos pot on offer.

The February Seniors Stableford was played on the temporary greens thanks to a frosty start.

A pair of Tony’s filled the top two places, and they were only separated by a countback after both posted 43 points.

Newly-installed Seniors secretary Tony Roper had the superior back nine to claim the win from Tony Bissett.

Ken Ponter was third on 41 and he too won a countback for that honour with a trio of 41 points cards posted.

Ponter beat a pair of Georges in the form of Stratford, who ended up fourth, and Thomas in fifth.
