BURNHAM United’s three club sides suffered defeat on Saturday, with the first team beaten 6-1 by Uphill Castle in Somerset County Division 1W.

A Daniel Thomas hat-trick did half the damage, with Jack Askins, Sam Beresford and Michael Deane also scoring for the home side.

Finley Wilkinson netted for United, who were brought down to earth with a crash after a fine 3-0 victory over Winscombe in their previous outing.

After Askins missed a penalty for the hosts, they were awarded a second spot-kick which Thomas tucked away for 1-0.

Thomas added his second and Beresford also netted before the break, meaning that despite Wilkinson’s effort for the visitors, it was 3-1 to the Castle at half time.

Deane made it 4-1 with a powerful shot from distance, before Thomas completed his hat-trick from Beresford’s cross.

Askins then chipped the keeper to round off the scoring and a miserable day for the away side.

Rather than pushing on towards the top half of the table, United’s seventh league defeat of the season leaves them in eighth place on 17 points, while Uphill Castle are up to sixth.

There was some good news for United, however, as they unveiled a new signing: Jordie Eldridge, who joins from Berrow.

As for United’s Reserves, they were beaten 2-1 at home by 1610 Taunton United in the Somerset County Division 2 Cup.

Luc Walker scored the goal for the hosts, but it was not enough to prevent them finishing bottom of Group G of the competition, with four points from six matches.

Burnham United A were in Atwell Shield action in the Weston & District League, and they suffered a 7-0 home mauling by Westend in their second round tie.

Westend, to be fair, are currently third in the second division (only one point off the top), whereas United sit eighth in Division 4.

HIGHBRIDGE Town moved to within a point of Burnham United in Division 1W after a 4-0 away win over Combe St Nicholas.

Remarkably, all four goals came from one player - Christopher Taylor.

Town’s first win since November – when they beat Combe 3-1 at home – sees them ninth with a game in hand over United.

And in the Somerset County Premier, Berrow lost 2-1 to visitors Odd Down Reserves, as Ben Bradley’s brace outcounted Dax Vincent’s strike for the hosts.
