PAUL West has stepped down as manager of Bridgwater Town after just one season back at the club.

A club statement said West leaves on 'amicable terms' and an announcement on his successor will be made as soon as possible.

Bridgwater Town's acting chairman, Bob Buckingham said: "It is with some regret that, this afternoon (Wednesday), our first team manager Paul West tendered his resignation.

"Paul leaves us on amicable terms and myself and the committee wish to thank him for all the hard work he put in last season, especially considering the duress he was often under off the pitch and also the fact that he was fielding, at times, a young and inexperienced squad.

"It will be noted that Paul gave many local youngsters an opportunity to make the step up into Southern League football and with this in mind, the remit that he had to keep the clubs Southern League status, was always going to be tough.

"However, it was achieved and for that we are extremely grateful to him.

"It is hoped that last year's squad will stay with the club and continue their own journeys with us, as despite the problems that the newly formed committee are currently facing, there is a considerable air of optimism regarding future developments both on and off the pitch.

"I understand that at times like this speculation and rumour will be rife, however an announcement regarding Paul's successor will be made as soon as possible and we ask you to bear with us while this process is taking place.

"Please note that no further comment will be made on the subject at this present time."
