RUSSELL Shaw and his son Matt teamed up with Tony Richards and Murray Parsons to win the Christmas Scramble for the Grumpy Trophy at Brean Golf Club on Sunday.

On a very windy and chilly morning when it seemed likely that not too many would be willing to venture out, a healthy 11 teams took to the course for the Texas Scramble event.

The players certainly had their shot-making skills tested to the max by the strong wind, but the winning foursome managed to beat par by just over 10 shots with their nett 59.1.

This gave them a 0.9 advantage over the runners up of Tom and Dan Broom, Dave Hunter and Trevor Pitt who in turn held the narrowest of margins, 0.1, over the third placed team of Roger and Jenny Vaughan, Ron Vine and Steve Jones.

Pete Barton and Richard Triscott teamed up to win the Christmas Ransome on a breezy Saturday at Brean.

They were only one of two pars to beat the par of 70 in the event which sees three different formats played.

The pair only teamed up on the morning after other players dropped out, mainly due to the poor weather forecast that never really materialised. The duo ended the day with a nett 69 to win by 0.7 of a shot from Phil Hodgson and Dave Porter.

The Hodgson/Porter pairing topped up their winnings though with the only two of the day at the 2nd.

The Seniors also played a Ransome in their Winter League event last week as Barrie Yearsley and Stuart Adams were the winning duo.

They scored a nett 62 to win by 0.7 of a shot from Tony Roper and Ian Raymond.

Third place went to Chris Stephens and Charlie Hastie who started like the proverbial steam train but ran out of puff on the homeward stretch for 63.4.
