TAUNTON Town’s FA Cup journey came to an end on Tuesday night when they were beaten 3-1 at Truro City in the second qualifying round replay.

Following Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Wordsworth Drive, the Peacocks made the long trip to Cornwall and made a lively start, but it was the home side who came closest to scoring in the early stages when a shot by Matt Wright hit the post on 17 minutes.

Wright had a hand in the opening goal after 31 minutes – his shot was saved by Taunton keeper Lloyd Irish, but Ryan Brett pounced to score from close range.

But the Truro lead lasted just two minutes, as Taunton’s top scorer Jordan Rogers latched onto a pass by Ben Carter and shot home past Martin Rice for his 12th goal of the campaign.

The mortal blow came just two minutes after half-time when Brett’s corner was headed in at the far post by Wright.

Taunton continued to battle gamely, but the third goal arrived 21 minutes from time when another Brett corner was headed in by Arran Pugh.

Ten minutes later, Taunton were down to ten men when Carter committed his second bookable offence and was sent to the dressing room by Bristol referee Adam Ricketts.

Truro had an opportunity to increase their lead in injury time when Isaac Vassell was fouled, but Irish comfortably saved Vassell’s spot-kick.

Taunton Town welcome Godalming Town to Wordsworth Drive on Saturday in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy.
