Wembdon 163-6 beat Butleigh 162 by four wickets

SIX wickets from Jon Brockwell helped set up a fourth straight home win for Wembdon as they beat Butleigh by four wickets on Saturday.

Winning the toss Wembdon elected to field first - a decision they wouldn't regret as Jon Brockwell took two wickets in his first over to leave Butleigh 2-2 from two overs.

The next wicket fell again to Brockwell as the Butleigh batters had little answer to his opening spell, before a 67-run fourth wicket partnership between Matt Pope (59) and J Tucker (29) showed some resistance.

It was Will Pope (3-47) who got the next breakthrough, claiming two wickets in an over to leave Butleigh 90-5 from 33 overs.

Brockwell’s second spell had the desired affect again, with a wicket with his very first ball to remove the dangerous M Pope for 59.

With Pope gone the remaining five wickets fell in a seven over period as Brockwell returned figures of 6-19 as Butleigh were bowled out for 162 in 47 overs.

In reply, the new look partnership of Dan Bingham and Jack Lowe got Wembdon off to a blistering start, striking 22 from the first two overs.

Butleigh seamer's had little to trouble the opening pair who brought up a 50-run opening stand in the 13th over.

Bilsborough got the breakthrough for Butleigh, having Lowe (25) stumped - and Karl Trunks (11) was promoted up the order to attack the spinners.

A couple of big blows got him started before he was undone by some sharp bounce.

Bingham had now reached his half century and joined at the crease by R Gower.

Their partnership didn't last much further as Bilsborough claimed another victim bowling Bingham for 51.

Gower and the in-form Joshua Marrs moved the score on to 140-3 from 30 overs, before Gower brought up a maiden half century of the season off just 37 balls.

Three wickets fell in the 31st over to ensure a nervy end to proceedings, but Gower and Brendan Pope completed victory with 16 overs remaining.

Next week Wembdon host Bishops Lydeard, 1pm start.
