Wembdon 241-6 beat North Perrott 200-9 by 41 runs

A MAIDEN league century from Joshua Marrs fired Wembdon to a fine victory over table-topping North Perrott on Saturday.

Australian Marrs scored 111 to help the visitors recover from 20-2 to post 241-6 from their 50 overs, before claiming three run outs to set up a ninth league win of the season for Wembdon.

Wembdon skipper Richard Eckley lost the toss and was asked to bat first at a very fine looking North Perrott.

Two quick wickets for Will Ireland had Wembdon 20-2 after six overs which brought together in-form pair Billy Vickery and Joshua Marrs – and the pair added 47 for the third wicket when Vickery was well caught for 28.

Brockwell, another Wembdon batter in good form of late, joined Marrs at the wicket.

Marrs soon brought up a classy half century from 70 balls as Wembdon reached 94-3 at drinks.

With 15 overs to go and Wembdon 130-3, Brockwell was well caught in the deep for 32 ending a solid 69 run partnership.

Wembdon brought up the 200 in the 45th over and added just shy of 50 runs in the final five overs, in which Marrs completed his maiden league century for Wembdon from 114 balls, as Wembdon posted an imposing total.

In reply, Perrott - who boast the top two run scorers in the division - started well with G Whorlow in fine touch from the off.

Brendan Pope got the initial breakthrough after 12 overs courtesy of a good catch in the gully from Gliddon.

Wembdon managed to dry up the runs by starving Whorlow of the strike and Perrott’s run rate of four an over in the first ten overs, became less than three in the second ten.

Brendan Pope returned figures of 1-19 from ten overs - and younger brother Will got in on the action following a period of low scoring to claim two wickets in two balls, including that of Whorlow (46) clean bowled by a top yorker.

A stand of 60 for the fifth wicket came to an end with a superb run out from man of the moment Marrs – and this sparked an incredible spell in the game as Perrott had four runs outs in just a handful of overs, three of which by Marrs.

Perrott had hit the self destruct button and crumbled to 162-8 from 42 overs, before a superb spell of bowling from Aaron Phillips (2-28) put an end to Perrott’s chances.

Wembdon will look to continue this fine run at home to Butleigh on Saturday (1pm).
