DEFEAT was the theme of the weekend for the majority of the area’s cricket teams, with all three Wedmore teams, two Lympsham sides and Huntspill and District all finishing on the wrong end of results.

In Division Three, Lympsham suffered an eight-run defeat at Curry Rivel, despite half-centuries from Dave (66) and Jack Luff (50).

Chasing 219 to win, Lympsham finished up 210-6 at the end of 45 overs, with T Gooding finishing up 38 not out.

For Curry Rivel, H Wilkes (3-44) and E Clark (2-38) were the pick of the bowlers, ensuring they would take 31 points from the match.

Earlier, Jack Luff (2-30) and J Froud (2-66) took two wickets apiece, as Rivel posted an above par total batting first.

P Tilley (67), M Tilley (51no) and P Higginson (41) all made sizeable contributions for the hosts.

Elsewhere in the division, Huntspill and District fell 50 runs short at Long Sutton, as four batsman made starts but failed to cash in.

C Slack (46), T Garner (32), D Cavill (39) and C Organ (22) all got themselves in, but were unable to capitalise on their strong starts, as Huntspill slumped to 178 all out in pursuit of Sutton’s 228-6.

E Herridge (5-30) was chief destroyer for the hosts, while J Cook (4-12) provided good support at the other end.

Sam Lillycrop (2-53) and S Lismore (2-71) were the pick of the Huntspill attack, while C Organ (1-34) and T Garner (1-17) bagged one wicket apiece.

For the home side, P Andrews (62), H Vigar (55) and D Lazarides (37) paved the way for a comfortable win.

Wedmore lost out by two wickets at home to North Perrott 2nd XI in Division Four, despite 4-29 from N Emery.

Batting first, Wedmore could only muster 199 all out, with D Haining (49), S Morris (32) and S Boley (31) topping the bill.

But the Perrott reply wasn’t a straight forward one, as Emery, with support from J Burgess (2-47), I Harris (1-43) and B Burgess (1-48) made life difficult.

The visitors owed a lot to the innings’ of J Hawkins and F Spurway (55no) – two of only three players to make double figures – as they edged home with six balls to spare.

In Division 8N, Lympsham 2nd XI were thrashed by 202 runs at home to Banwell and Churchill 2nd XI, having been bowled out for just 83.

Needing an unlikely 286 to win, Lympsham were skittled out inside 25 overs by a rampant visiting side, who had earlier amassed a huge total thanks to fine innings from M Caddick (95), R Hutchinson (70) and C Langley (40).

T Ferns (1-65), A Ferns (1-48) and A Russ (1-61) were the only wicket takers for Lympsham on a dismal afternoon.

Elsewhere in Division 8N, Wedmore 2nd XI were beaten by 37 runs at Spaxton, despite a superb all-round performance from T Ingle.

The all-rounder took 5-38 from nine overs to help bowl Spaxton out for 227, before being left high and dry on 80 not out, as Wedmore fell well short.

T Bellinger (68), D Russell (37) and B Rich (33) helped Spaxton to what turned out to be a match winning total – and with the ball, R Brewer was the pick of the Spaxton attack with 4-34 from nine overs.

Finally, Wedmore A lost to Uphill Castle Crusaders by five wickets in Division 9NW.

Batting first, Wedmore were dismissed for 116 inside 38 overs, before Crusaders survived an early scare from C Curtin (4-46) to ease home with more than 20 overs to spare.

P Sloman (42no) and M Ogbourne (22no) saw the home side to victory.
