Shortwood United 5, Bridgwater Town 0

BRIDGWATER Town crashed to their heaviest defeat of the season, losing 5-0 to Shortwood United on Saturday, writes Eddie Robinson.

The kick-off was delayed by ten minutes because of an accident on the M5.

Dean Griffiths, a surprise starter after his nasty looking injury the previous Saturday had the game's first chance but hesitated when played in by Joe Bushin and the opportunity was gone.

Shortwood took the lead after just three minutes, Craig Allan missed his tackle, enabling White to move the ball to his right before firing past the exposed Ben John.

On seventeen minutes Griffiths nodded down a free kick to Tom Knighton whose shot went wide.

Play was fairly even, but Shortwood were getting into dangerous positions too easily.

Knighton and Bushin were isolated feeding on scraps and never receiving a pass that enabled them to set up a meaningful attack.

Bridgwater and the travelling supporters had to wait until the forty-third minute before making an incisive attack. Griffiths found Alex Grimshaw, whose cross lead to Ollie Chamberlain's low shot being well saved.

Just a goal down at the interval, Bridgwater had all to play for and Allward slid the ball through to Chamberlain whose pass found Knighton, his shot flying a foot wide of the near post, a glimpse of better things.

Ollie Chamberlain, Bridgwater's best player on the day was flattened on the half way line earning Lee a booking.

The free kick was played too short, enabling Thomas to go past three powder puff tackles before finding Price against a hopelessly undermanned defence, his cross gave a simple finish for White - a dreadful goal to concede.

On sixty-four minutes Bridgwater made all three substitutions, however it was the Shortwood substitutes who had the greater impact and between them Klein-Davies, Egan and Langworthy added three more goals, their pace exposing an increasingly vulnerable defence.

Bridgwater Town:- John, Grimshaw, Allward (Byrne 64), Allan, Rudge, Robertson (Cpt, O'Hare 64), Welling, Chamberlain, Knighton, Bushin (McNab 64) and Griffiths.
