TAUNTON United 1610 lost 5-4 at leaders Winscombe in Division 2 (W) of the Somerset league.

Ten minutes in and 1610 took a surprise but deserved lead after a quick counter. Ashley Parker took it round the Winscombe midfield before forcing his way into the box and his cross was stopped by the hand of the Winscombe right back.

The referee had no choice but to award a penalty which was coolly dispatched by Ben Martin.

United didn’t let up and after another 15 minutes found themselves 2-0 up following good work from Ben Martin. He managed to squeeze in a shot that was well blocked but resulted in the ball falling to the feet of Nick Bull who kept his nerve to slot into the empty net.

Winscombe struggled to cope with 1610’s energy, but a lapse in concentration just before half time resulted in Adam Skyner making it 2-1.

Just ten minutes into the second half Winscombe converted a penalty after Aaron Lake’s challenge was harshly penalised.

A couple of minutes later and another lapse in concentration at the back let the Winscombe front line in for their third.

Winscombe continued to look the more dangerous but 1610 continued to battle and were rewarded for their efforts after a Luke Walsh free kick was spilled by the keeper and fell to the feet of Tom Robins to smash into the empty net.

Then with just five minutes to go 1610 carved out another opportunity from a similar position and once again the Winscombe keeper failed to gather and Ashley Parker restored the lead.

1610 must have thought they had won, but some lacklustre defending resulted in their opponents scoring straight from the restart to level the score once again.

Again 1610 would have settled for a hard-earned draw, but in the final minute Winscombe broke through the backline again and Parker’s tackle this time was harshly penalised.

Winscombe were awarded their second penalty of the game and their striker made no mistake in converting.
