CHARD teenager Liam Brown has just been crowned British BMX champion – but as far as his ambitions go that is just the start.

Liam, who is 17 and went to Holyrood Academy, won the British title at the Cyclopark in Kent and finished the season with the national title at the indoor track in Manchester.

His victories – at the end of a season which saw him ride all over the country as well as in France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark – came despite the fact he was the youngest rider in the Championship class.

Liam, who has been racing for six years, said: “Now I’m looking forward to next season when I’m moving up to the Elite men category – the highest level there is in the sport.

“My plans for next year include riding in the Supercross event in Manchester and training with other Elite riders in California after Christmas.”

Liam trains six days a week with two days on the track and the rest in the gym.

His dedication to the sport is clear, but the cost of the sport is currently his toughest hurdle.

He said: “My aim is to get right to the top but unfortunately there’s very little money in BMX. Even if you win an Elite level race the winner’s prize money can be as little as £275.”

Liam is supported by his father, who runs a Chard plastering business, Cdm Drylining Ltd. And he also gets help from TS5C, who fund young athletes in Somerset.

But he is badly in need of extra sponsorship to help with travel and race fees if he is to be one of the world’s best.

Liam said: “Any offers for sponsorship would be greatly appreciated.” He can be contacted on 01460-65945.
