SALLY Freeman, a coach at Chard Tennis Club, played a key role for Great Britain Over-60s as they claimed the gold medal at the world team championships in Turkey.
The British team was unbeaten throughout the championships and beat the United States in the final.
They defeated Poland, Argentina and Germany in the round robin stages before eliminating Holland in the last four to reach the final. In the final Freeman played the No2 singles and won 6-1, 7-5 . GB’s number one singles player lost so it had to go to a deciding doubles.
And Freeman rose to the occasion by scoring the winning point in the decider with a smash to clinch a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
Two other Chard members were also in Turkey playing in the Over-70s tournament.
Jacky Boothman and her team come home with a bronze medal while Ellie Krocke, playing for Holland, finished fifth. Both Boothman and Krocke have stayed on in Turkey to compete in the world individual championships.
