A DAY of fun and action awaits racegoers at Smeatharpe Stadium between Taunton and Honiton tomorrow (1pm).

There will be an impressive showing of Formula Two Stock Cars for a double trophy day. The trophies attributed to two long-lost friends of West Country stock car racing – Dave Wilson and Steve Rich – will both be up for grabs on the day’s feature final.

Among the leading contenders for honours will be past and present track champions, Neil Hooper and Chris Bradbury, 2013 World Champion James ‘Tiger’ Rygor and Jamie Avery of Newton Abbot, who was this year’s best placed South-West driver in the world final.

Local interest will include Mike Rice of Uffculme, Matt Stoneman of Willand and Mike Priddle of Milverton – each of whom will be eligible for the start of meeting White & Yellow grade grand final.

The Saloon Stock Cars have had a trying season at times in the South-West, suffering from a shortage of local drivers. However, numbers are now on the up, with Cornwall-based Luke Thomas having made his comeback on August Bank Holiday Sunday, and now his brother, Ross Thomas of Paignton, is set to make his return, too.

There is visiting interest expected, from East Anglian Dean Mayes, from Shane Davies of Gravesend, and from Track Championship leader Steve Webster of Sheffield.

The non-contact Stock Rods will return to Smeatharpe for the first time since mid-July. On that occasion, Chris Drake of Crediton scored a famous victory in the British Championship.

Drake will be back in action, in pursuit of the West of England Championship, and he will be joined by Neil Truran from St Austell, who has enjoyed a fine season too, winning both the ORC Championship at Buxton in the Peak District, and the English Championship at Barford in Co. Durham.

Truran is also the defending West of England Champion.

Plenty of local racers will populate the two litre Old Skool National Bangers, including Dan Whitfield from Cullompton, and Bridgwater-based Dan Burton who is set for his first appearance of the season.

Brothers Terry and Sam Hill of Exmouth have been among the leading stars in the series this season.
