AVENUE Tennis Club in Burnham concluded the 96th annual Burnham-on- Sea Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday after a week-long festival of tennis.

This year saw a very large entry with players coming from all over the South-West, South Wales, Cheshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

Some 272 competitors entered the 33 events, ages ranged from five (mini-tennis) to 78 and over 400 matches were played during the week.

The junior tournament is classed as a LTA Grade Three and players receive ranking points relative to how far they advance in their event.

LTA referee Graeme Luckin said: “This is my first year refereeing this event, and it’s certainly one of the most enjoyable and successful ones I’ve run this year.

“I’ll certainly look forward to returning next year. It’s a great tennis club with excellent facilities which Burnham should be proud of.”

Some Avenue players did well with Lyn O’Dell and Malcolm Hall winning the veteran mixed doubles, beating club members Poo Jenkins and Barry Ramsden in the final.

Avenue head coach Jonny Horn and Kelli-Ann Vennall beat Matthew Warnes and Kerry Matthews in a hard fought final of the mixed doubles handicap event.

The club is grateful to INTERSPORT Tony Pryce Sports and RBC Capital Markets for providing sponsorship.
