BANGER RACING: Smeatharpe prepares for feast of racing

This is The West Country: BANGER RACING: Smeatharpe prepares for feast of racing BANGER RACING: Smeatharpe prepares for feast of racing

A DAY of fun and destruction awaits racegoers at Smeatharpe Stadium between Taunton and Honiton on Sunday (1pm).

Somewhere in the region of 30 two-litre National Bangers are set to chase vital World Championship points which are on offer as part of the first-ever Westcountry Wreckfest event.

Both major events at Smeatharpe so far this year for the National Bangers – the Winter Open in January and Crasharama in May, have been won by Steve Bailey of Whitstone. There is plenty of local interest, with Ben King of Taunton and Bridgwater’s David Brown due in action.

Reliant Robins tend to raise a smile even when spotted on the road, so there is likely to be plenty of comedy value For most folk, seeing a Robin Reliant driving along the road is often enough to raise a smile, so there is bound to be plenty of comedy value when a clutch of them are raced on a short oval circuit. The ‘Plastic Pigs’ have not been raced at Smeatharpe since 2010, but there was a clamour for them to be returned to the fixture and nearly 20 are set to line up.

The climax of the meeting will be a Caravan Chaos event – but with a difference. Typically, the caravan race sees dilapidated caravans towed by cars, but for this particular event, the Reliant Robins will tow a small number of caravans, and the other Reliant Robins will have the opportunity to smash them to smithereens in an orgy of destruction and devastation.

The British Championship for the non-contact Stock Rods has attracted a most impressive entry. In addition to a good number of drivers from the South-West, there will be drivers from across England and Northern Ireland.

Neil Truran from St Austell recently won the ORC Championship at Buxton in the Peak District. Having also recently won the last Stock Rod feature final at Smeatharpe, Truran will be one of the more fancied entrants for the British title.
