Somerset Cricket League Division Two

Burnham 148-7 drew with Castle Cary 94-6 - match affected by rain

RAIN denied Burnham a second successive league victory as the wet weather set in with them well placed to beat Castle Cary.

Cary were 94-6 and struggling along in pursuit of Burnham's total of 148-7 when rain put an end to proceedings, after Darren Aston had torn through the middle order with a devastating spell of 3-8 from six overs.

Rob Driver (2-24) and Mike Green (1-27) had done the early damage for Burnham, but Cary's M King dug in to repair the innings.

But when he departed for 55, Burnham were into the tail and looking good for another hard-earned victory.

Brian Brogden bowled eight economical overs, four of which were maidens, going for just eight runs - and James Annison was also on form with a testing four over spell.

Elswood dug in for the hosts with 18 not out, batting at number four - and Leach (1no) was new to the crease.

Earlier, Jim Bloodworth (68no) and Ed Booth (30) had carried Burnham to 148-7 on a difficult batting pitch.

Brad House (10) and M Tipler (17no) were the only other players to reach double figures, but Bloodworth and Booth had given them something to bowl at.

Burnham host mid-table Barrington next Saturday, before travelling to Wells the following week.

They currently sit second bottom in Division two, 41 points clear of bottom side Belvedere and hot on the tail of Saturday's opponents.
