WEPL Premier One
Ashcott & Shapwick 132 lost to Weston-super-Mare 133-7 by three wickets
ANOTHER disappointing batting display condemned Ashcott & Shapwick to another defeat in Premier One of the WEPL, this time to Weston-super-Mare.
Ashcott could only muster 132 having won the toss and elected to bat, with James Hayman (32) top scoring.
After a middle order wobble, Weston reached their target with three wickets and 18 overs to spare, courtesy of 54 from John Williams.
The result leaves Ashcott a long way off the pace at the bottom of Premier One, with only one win from 11 games.
Former Somerset bowler Charl Willoughby was chief destroyer for Weston with 4-26, as he took out the top order with some high quality left-arm swing bowling.
Steve Coppell (23) had looked well set, but he fell to the spin of Ashley Allen (1-25).
Karmarkar (21) was another to get a start, but like Coppell, he was unable to go on and departed to the bowling of Chris Davidson (1-20).
Hayman gave the scorecard an element of respectability with 32, but Ashcott knew they were below par.
Needing early wickets, Hayman (1-23) trapped Trego LBW without scoring – and when Harte (1-13) clean bowled Jason Neave for seven, they hosts were back in the game.
Sam Spencer (1-20) removed Davidson for 19, but Williams was standing firm and reached his half-century with a well-struck boundary.
Ben Rudge’s (3-31) flurry of wickets looked to be swinging the game back towards Ashcott, but Allen (16no) ensured Weston would leave with the points.
