Fey praises pre-season attitudes as strong finish earns win at Street

This is The West Country: Fey praises pre-season attitudes as Town get off to a flyer at Street Fey praises pre-season attitudes as Town get off to a flyer at Street

BRIDGWATER Town manager Richard Fey praised the attitude and commitment of his squad following a 5-1 pre-season victory over Street on Saturday.

The Robins scored four goals in the final half an hour against Street, with Daine O'Connor netting a hat-trick, to kick off the new season in emphatic style - and Fey believes his side are well set to consolidate their position in Calor League South & West again this season.

He said: “We've been back in training for a few weeks now and the lad's attitudes have superb - and the levels of fitness they are showing are really impressive. It shows, because we scored four goals in the last half an hour on Saturday.

“I've been asked to keep the club in the division again this season and I'm confident we can do that, especially with the new lads and the ones who have decided to stay.”

The club recently announced a list of arrivals and departures for the new campaign, with Tom Knighton, Karl Tooze, Jack Allward, Nathan Rudge, Karim Rendall, Andy Robertson, Scott Thomas, Craig Allan and Tyne Govier all opting to re-sign with the Robins - while Ollie Chamberlain and Callum Laird have arrived at Fairfax Park from Weston and Wellington respectively.

Mitchell Page, Alex Faux, Sam Alexander, Jake Mawford, James Pilling, Geraint Bater and Danny Greaves have all decided to leave - but Fey says he has been “overwhelmed” by the number of players choosing to stay.

He said: “With the budget being cut by half for this season, we weren't sure who would be sticking around, but the lads that have stayed, I've been overwhelmed by, because it shows they are staying for the right reasons.”

Town crank up their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Bristol City at Fairfax Park next Saturday (July 19) - and the manager is hoping for a big turn out from the club's supporters.

He said: “We really want to see a big crowd on Saturday, that's why we arranged the friendly, to get the crowds in. City took a full team to Portishead a few weeks back, so we're hoping they will do the same for us.”

Kickoff is 3pm at Fairfax Park.

Bristol City will not be sending a strong squad for the friendly for 3 reasons.

1) they are off in Botswana for a pre season training camp with a friendly over there on Monday

2) the fixture is not listed on the Bristol City website.

3) Bristol City website has it listed a friendly for their U18.

Better to know now than turn up thinking your see City' s Lge 1 squad.

Jody do you really have nothing better to do than play down all of Bridgwater Town's friendlies against league clubs? I remember you did it last year after Town beat Cheltenham 1-0 as well. Why not comment on Taunton Town's big friendly with Walsall, give yourself a change of scenery?

I am looking forward to the Walsall game as I know it will be their first team as they are down here training. We will probably get hammered as we did when we played Newport 1st team squad last season but it will be good to see League One players.

Last season Taunton played a Torquay X1. People were noy sure who would be playing for Torquay. All they had to do was look online to see the 1sts were playing the same night or one after so they would not feature. Turned out it was their U18s which was disappointing and we won 9 v nil. TBH I probably wouldn't of gone if I had known it was such a week Torquay side. They were 15, 16, 17 yr olds and hardly anyway had rhe quality to make it

Don't get me wrong it will probably be a useful work out for Feys men, fitness, confidence and maybe forge links with the City Yth set up and get 1 or 2 of their better U18s in on loan. Just don't expect any first teamers that's all.

But my question is why have you felt the need to repeatedly post on the Bridgwater Town Facebook page and now here, telling us all that Bristol City will not be fielding a full squad?
You're a Taunton fan as it is, why go out of your way to tell all of us at BTFC two years in a row that we won't be seeing a League side?

I think it is only fair that people know beforehand that it is not going to be Bristol Ciy's first team. Some people would be rather annoyed if they turned up and did not see the first team. Particularly avid young City fans who are hoping to see their idols.

Its a bit like going to see England play but only the U21's turn out or going to see a band but a tribute band turns up.

People will be expecting something that doesn't materialise and could go away disappointed and not return again.

If it happens every season at some point the casual/occassional fan will decide there is no point as its not the 1st team and then on another occassion when it is they won't be there.

I went to a Bridgwater friendly against Plymouth a few seasons ago and it turned out to be their 1st and 2nd year trainee's not one first team player. I think only 1 or 2 of those lads went on to play for the first team. I have not been to a Bridgwater friendly since.

You may wonder why I go to Bridgwater anyway. I in fact went to Bridgwater last season on 3 occasions. Previous season I have been to numerous games, including the play off final, Western League days and not only when Taunton were playing or even in the same league. I watch football in the westcountry in general if that is Taunton, Bridgwater, Wellington, Chard, Rovers, Exeter etc

My son is also a Bridgwater boy and may end up supporting Bridgwater or if he is good enough perhaps even playing for Bridgwater

I think you'll find that whn the game was announced it was listed as a game v a Bristol City XI anyway. I remember visiting Taunton Town a year or two ago when QPR visitied however I don't seem to remember much fuss on any of their official pages that it was only an academy game, which it was.
You sir are little better than a troll, I've been reading your comments on the BTFC Facebook page for a good while now and have yet to witness anything positive about the club. In fact I'm yet to witness anything constructive at all.

With a reduced budget this year, you should have more local and home grown lads. That in my book is a positive. Tyne Govier looked very good last year when we played you near the end of the season.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see both Bridgwater and Taunton do well, moving up through the leagues together. Same goes for Tivvy for that matter.

Personally I would like to see Taunton, Bridgy, WSM, Bath, Dorch, Weymouth, Truro, Chipps, Frome, Paulton, Tivvy, Mangos etc all competing at Conference South level or equivalent. Scrap the current pyramid I favour of regional conferences and a regionalised football league, North and South incorporating league 1 and 2.
