THE Avenue Tennis club hosted the Sedgemoor Area Schools Tennis Cup last Thursday, June 19.

Teams for the event were entered by eight schools from across Sedgemoor, including St Joseph’s, Berrow, St Andrew’s, Mark, North Petherton, Enmore and Hamp.

Each team of four in this novice event was made up of two boys and two girls, and six of the eight courts at the club were divided into four smaller courts for the competition, each with a junior net in place and the players used lower compression balls.

The children were supported by parents, grandparents, teachers and their teammates in matches which took place from 1pm to 4pm.

The finalists were Mark and St Joseph’s with St Joseph’s being the overall winners.

Head coach Jonny Horn said: “It was a pleasure to see so many children learning a new sport and getting into the spirit of the game.”

Both Mark and St Joseph’s School will represent Sedgemoor in the Schools Cup county final at Millfield School, Street, next Thursday, July 3.
