Bridgwater 110 lost to Downend 111-7 by three wickets

BRIDGWATER'S inconsistencies came to the fore yet again on Saturday as they went down by three wickets against Downend at The Parks.

Steffan Jones' side were dismissed for a disappointing 110 after being inserted, after Downend won a crucial toss in a damp humid atmosphere.

In a match reduced to 45 overs per side after two rain interruptions, the home sides innings never got going as Rhys Barrett (3-24) tore through the top order, exploiting the favourable conditions.

Steve Davis, with a patient 24no top scored, but Bridgwater could build no decent partnerships as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

A brief flurry from Robbie Montgomery, who hit the only six of the innings was ended by Matt Jackson, who then took the next three wickets, all caught at slip, to end with 4-28 as Bridgwater succumbed to 110 all out in only the 29th over.

Early wickets were crucial to defend such a low total and Mongomery (3-33) and Chris Skidmore didn't disappoint reducing the visitors to 18-4 after 12 overs.

Andy Roberts, Steffan Jones and Steve Davis all took a wicket each to give Bridgwater genuine hope of a remarkable victory, as Downend slumped to 49-7.

Unfortunately for Bridgwater, the only partnership of the day then took place, as Callum Loud (45no) and skipper Matt Jackson (25no) added 62 unbroken runs to steer their side to the win, as the home side's bowlers second spells lacked the penetration of their earlier efforts.

Next Saturday, Bridgwater travel to Corsham, while the table topping second X1 entertain Corsham, last seasons Champions, at 1pm.
