TAUNTON St Andrews cricketers are praying for a dry spell after vandals caused damage costing £900 to their covers at the Wyvern Club.

The Saints 1sts XI play in Premier One of the West of England Premier League, the highest in the area, in addition to which they run three other senior sides on a Saturday, a Sunday XI and six age group sides, two at Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15.

The covers have been in place for six years and when they were put in place they cost £3,500 – all of which came from fundraising activities.

The cost of repairing the damage will be £900, money that will have to be provided from club funds.

Richard Brice, the club chairman, said: “I think it is just so disappointing that somebody has seen it fit to vandalise our covers.

“The Saints provide cricket for a large number of players of all ages and it will be these people who will ultimately have to pay for the repair of the covers.

“All other cricket clubs in the area need to be aware that there are vandals out there and if anybody knows who is responsible they can contact me on 07870-583123.”
