WELLINGTON School hosted a challenge between Under-15 players from state and independent schools for the Somerset County Sports Cup.

Students from Queen’s College, King’s College, Taunton School and Wellington School played pupils from Castle School, Bishop Fox’s, Taunton Academy and Haygrove.

The independent schools made 97-9, Wellington’s Ben Howe top scoring with 36, while Jack Damon of Heathfield took 3-9 and Castle’s Sam Holmes chipped in with another three wickets.

The state schools replied with 90-7, Taunton’s Dom Drew taking 3-15.

The game was organised by former Somerset cricketer Steffan Jones, now a teacher at the school, and Russell Jones of Taunton Deane CC.

Jones said: “It will be an annual thing with the intention for it to be played at the County Ground and become Taunton’s ‘Varsity’ match.”

Wellington also enjoyed a fine evening’s cricket when a touring side from Mumbai took on their Under-14s in a game played in an excellent spirit.

The week was crowned by Wellington 1st XI beating Taunton School for the first time in 15 years.
