Chew Magna 186 beat Wembdon 61 by 125 runs

IAN Blackwell was unable to inspire Wembdon to a second victory of the season, as they slumped to a disappointing 125-run defeat at the hands of Chew Magna on Saturday.

Blackwell took 1-31 from ten overs to help bowl Chew Magna out for 186, but only managed a couple with the bat as Wembdon slumped to 61 all out inside 23 overs.

Wembdon won the toss and opted to bowl first and Brendan Pope was once again superb, starting with 29 consecutive dot balls to finish with figures of 3-17 from ten overs.

Chew Magna struggled to score quickly but they were patient and occupied the crease well.

Stuart Watson made a chanceless 102 and batted for the majority of the innings, while only two other team mates reached double figures.

Wembdon bowled well with Blackwell extracting outrageous turn and bounce on debut, wasted on the Chew batters.

Jon Brockwell picked up 3-26 in the latter overs in a crucial spell which finished with Chew being all dismissed for 186.

Wembdon were confident the total was gettable in a fixture they need to be and should be winning.

What happened next was their worst nightmare.

Things got off to a poor start as Gower fell to the first ball of the innings – Puddy and Brockwell followed shortly after to leave Wembdon 4-3.

Blackwell and Pope looked to stem the flow of wickets, but Blackwell went to a stunning caught and bowled as Wembdon slipped deeper into trouble.

Bingham and Phillips came together at 14-5 and started to play themselves in and add a few runs.

Phillips was harshly adjudged LBW after a 30 minute vigil at the crease.

His wicket was followed by Eckley who would be the fourth of five ducks on Saturday.

Trunks went first then Bingham was trapped LBW after an hour at the crease.

From 56-8 Wembdon were put out of their misery in the 23rd over.

Next weekend, Wembdon travel to high flying Taunton, 1pm start.
