WEPL Bristol & Somerset II

Wembdon II 249 lost to Minehead 279-4 by 30 runs

A QUICKFIRE 71 from Mike Watts wasn’t enough to propel Wembdon to what would have been a remarkable victory at Minehead.

Batting at number 8, Watts smashed his way to a half-century as Wembdon pursued Minehead’s imposing 279-4 – but him and Tim Bennett (43) couldn’t carry their side over the line as Wembdon fell 30 runs short.

Minehead won the toss and elected to bat and were helped by some wayward bowling early on - and a Minehead first team player being dropped culminated in a massive total being set.

Opening batsman Jason Weetch hit a flawless 140 as Minehead finished on 279-4.

In reply Wembdon got off to an awful start as they lost three of the top four without scoring - only Lott put up any resistance with a quick 31.

At 40-4 and then 60-6 Wembdon were really up against it – but a seventh wicket stand of 83 between Liam Pigden (28) and Mike Watts - and then 68 between Watts and Bennett took them within range.

Bennett continued the onslaught and left Wembdon needing just 40 runs from 10 overs, but when he was dismissed, Wembdon finished 30 runs short.

# Wembdon 2nd XI are at home to Bishopston on Saturday, 1.30pm start.
