MAGNUS Larsen of McKinlays 1st Chard Wheelers took part in his first mountain bike race at the weekend – and finished fifth in the British schools championships in Sussex.

Undaunted by the gruelling course and quality field, Larsen produced a performance in the Under-9 category that delighted both himself and father Gary.

The versatile and highly talented young rider had already taken fourth place in the ‘Rollers’ racing event and now lies in third place in the overall series.

The Wheelers have a rich history in the British schools championships with Jon Kettel, Paul Barratt and Ryan White all being past national champions.

Larsen himself took a silver medal in the hill climb race and track racing bronze in the national events last year.

Circuit racing continues this week with the first Team Tor 2000 series event at Merryfield, near Ilminster on Thursday.

The series is always well attended and well contested.

On the May Monday the Wheelers are staging their own Open ten mile Time Trial along the A303 from Feniton to Honiton and back.

A large club turnout is expected – both riders and helpers.
