Somerset County League Division One

Middlezoy Rovers 2, Burnham United 1

BURNHAM United surrendered a 1-0 half-time lead to go down 2-1 away at local rivals Middlezoy Rovers.

Matthew Scott fired Burnham into a 17th minute lead, and it was one which Burnham held until midway through the second half when captain Darren Cann levelled for Middlezoy.

The home side then pinched all three points with the final kick of the game as Steve Hall pounced on a loose ball to rifle in from close range.

In an evenly matched opening period Burnham surged into the lead as Scott took advantage of a mistake in the Zoy midfield to race through and slot home.

Unfortunately for Burnham, the lively Scott was taken off minutes later after a clash of heads with one of his own players.

Despite a strong wind, Zoy passed well and were unlucky to be behind at the break with Dan Luce and Andy Smith wasting great opportunities.

After the break, Middlezoy began to gain a foothold in the game, but Burnham’s defence continued to stand firm.

That was until the 73rd minute when Zoy Cann latched on to a Craig Berry ball to rifle home the equaliser.

A long range effort from Zoy’s Hall appeared to cross the line, but the referee was unable to award the goal, and Cann had another effort tipped over the bar from close range.

Despite terrific defending from Burnham, the winner came in the final seconds when Paul Atyeo was sent through on goal.

His effort rebounded off Elliot Lamb in the Burnham goal and into the path of Hall, who was on hand to stroke home the winner with the final kick of the game.
