WELLINGTON guaranteed themselves a top half finish in Division One of the Toolstation Western League with a 2-2 draw at home to Wincanton this afternoon.

The Tangerines were indebted to stand-in skipper Jake Viney in goal as he repelled late Wincanton pressure to secure a share of the spoils.

Jamie Dingle should have put Wellington ahead in the first three minutes as he volleyed over when through on goal.

And it was a costly miss as Wincanton’s big centre half headed powerfully home from a corner.

Alex Piper – who has re-found his form recently – lofted a fine equaliser for Wellington after running through the Wincanton defence.

Then Ollie Chamberlain put the home side into a half-time lead with a good close range finish.

The second half was a tense affair. Wellington used all three substitutes and one of these, Liam Cleal, made good ground and delivered a good ball into the area only to see it go unconverted.

Wincanton forced a series of free kicks. One of these was saved onto the post, but the rebound was headed home to level things up.

Wellington were hanging on come the end but Viney was equal to everything that was thrown at him.

Wellington complete their season at home to champions Bradford Town on Saturday, May 3
