FOOTBALL: Chard Town stage rousing comeback
Updated 11:41am Friday 21st March 2014 in Sport
HAVING not scored more than three goals in a game all season Chard Town came up trumps on Tuesday when they recovered from 3-2 to beat Westbury United 5-3 at Zembard Lane, writes Rod Harrington.
On a hard surface the game developed into predominantly an aerial duel between the sides with Chard unfortunately finding themselves two goals in arrears early on.
In only the third minute a corner was headed in by Matthew Jones and, following a defensive blunder, Mark Young swept through to slip the ball past Jason Hutchings in the Chard goal eleven minutes later.
On 31 minutes the home side were back in the hunt when Nathan Warren found space to get a shot in from some distance which was deflected into the top corner of the net.
On the stroke of half time Richard Hebditch was upended in the box and Sam Clark despatched the spot kick to level matters.
However, having clawed their way back into the game a free kick from Westbury's Joe Moloney took a deflection off the wall of defenders and evaded Hutchings to give the Wiltshire visitors their third goal on 62 minutes.
Five minutes later Mark Scott scored from close range to level the scores again and on 71 minutes Clark curled a delightful free kick into the top corner of the net.
The scoring was completed by substitute Ed Butcher two minutes form the end when he chose his spot well to beat the Westbury keeper.
