MERRIOTT & Crewkerne Ladies scored a 1-0 success at Winsham United Ladies in division two of the Somerset Women's league.

If games were won on scoring opportunities, Winsham would have had three points in the bag by half time.

But it is all about getting the ball in the net and on this occasion Winsham failed to turn their many chances into goals and paid the price two minutes from the end of the first half when Becky Knight found the net following a good move down the left flank.

The first 20 minutes belonged to the home team as Kate Hartley, Sam Caddy and Rachel Winters all came close to getting their names on the scoresheet as they flashed shots inches wide of the post.

In fact, it wasn’t until the 28th minute that Winsham keeper Marie Abercrombie was called into action to make a save.

The one-way traffic continued and when Winsham did get a shot on target, visitors keeper Katie Northam kept her side in the game with some excellent saves.

The second half went much the same way as the first with Winsham camped in the visitors half for long spells.

Emma Lovelock came close to grabbing an equaliser in the 78th minute when a well struck effort sped across the goal, followed by a shot by Hartley that sailed over the bar.

With three minutes remaining, Merriott came close to doubling their advantage, as Jess Humphrey was allowed time to tee up her shot, but the ball drifted just the wrong side of the upright.
