GOLF: Victory for Scotland at Burnham & Berrow
8:36am Tuesday 18th March 2014 in Sport
THE Scottish Team took the honours in the annual international match between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales for club members at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club last weekend.
Over 120 players took part in the Stableford format with the winning team decided on the best average score.
The contest could not have been closer with the average score having to be taken down to three decimal places to determine the result with Scotland on 25.04 points average, beating England into second place with 25.036 points average.
The best individual score of the day with 36 points was by Chris Perry.
Clive Matthews was next with 35 and with seven players tied in third with 32 points it demonstrated how difficult the course was playing in the cool wind which was blowing across the course.
Wales finished third and, unlike their winning Six Nations Rugby Union counterparts, Ireland took home the wooden spoon.
Frank Ellis, the Scottish team Captain, made the winning speech on behalf of his team at the dinner in the evening which is also themed with dishes from the four home nations.
The Ladies’ match was won by Wales with Ireland second, Scotland third and England fourth.
Burnham & Berrow are through to the third round of The Mail on Sunday national Golf Club Classic after a 5 – 0 home win against Cannington Golf Club.
On another windy day, the team played some excellent golf in very tricky conditions to secure the victory.
Results – Neil Darby won 1up, Andy Harriott won 7&6, Glyn Petrie won 3&1, Harvey Sampson won 9&7 and Adrian Deakins won 5&4.
Geoff Sloman won the Seniors Stableford with 37 points on a count back after he had tied with Winston Antill, and Jane Powell won the Ladies Medal with a Net 80.
