PADBROOK Park bowed out of the Mail on Sunday Classic as they lost narrowly 3-2 to Tiverton.

Jamie Smith led Padbrook off with an excellent 2&1 victory over Tony Allsop.

Hamish Marshall fought from 3 down after seven holes to half his match as he won the last two holes.

Rod Hutchings and Curtis Edwards came up against opponents in good form so it all came down to Cary Rawlings.

He needed to win his game against Andy Pryce to take the match to extra holes.

Despite giving away five shots Rawlings was one up with two to play. But Pryce rolled in an excellent birdie putt on the 17th to square the match.

Rawlings saw his 15 foot birdie putt on the last hole slip agonisingly past.

The game was tied which was enough for Tiverton to move into the third round.

Padbrook Captain Rod Hutchings said: “It couldn’t have been much closer. It’s very hard to win on your opponents’ course but we almost did.”

A strong last three holes saw Mark Want claim the March Stableford.

He scored 40 points to edge out Steve Held by a point. Want’s finish of par-birdie-par proved decisive.

Held, who fired three birdies on the back nine, was left to rue his dropped shot on the final hole.

Mark Perrott took third place with 38 points.

Result: 1 M Want 40pts, 2 S Held 39, 3 M Perrott 38, 4 S Palmer 38, 5 C Edwards 37, 6 N Cowley 37, 7 A Pym 36, 8 G Stevenson 35.
