BOWLS: Chard cope well on tricky mat
5:00pm Thursday 30th January 2014 in Sport
CHARD A performed extremely well to earn a draw on Colyton’s difficult surface in the East Devon league.
Colyton always provideds a challenge for visiting teams due to the significant slope of the floor. One of Chard’s pairs adjusted well winning both their games. Even so there were ends when most bowls ended off the mat.
The other pairing just could not get to grips with bowling downhill in one direction and then up a significant slope in the other.
On one end they were lying three but Colyton managed to send the jack off the match. In this event the end is replayed and Colyton won the end. That was the story of the afternoon for this pair.
One of the singles players for Chard A won both his matches but the other lost both hers although one game was 5-5 going into the last end.
Chard A can congratulate themselves on earning a draw at this difficult venue although Colyton did win 59-53 on shots.
On Friday Chard A were away to Sidford.
Sidford were beaten 8-0 when they visited Chard but managed to almost reverse this result, winning 7-1.
Many of the games were close and could have gone either way.
Thursday saw another round of play in the Milford and Dormor Mixed Triples.
Hurricanes gave Harlequins a bit of a scare when they took fout shots on the second end.
But this only spurred Harlequins into action and they finally took the match 21-9.
On the face of it this appears an easy win but many ends were so close that a small touch on the jack made a significant difference to the score. Having lost two games since Christmas Harlequins were glad to win again as their lead had been narrowed by the other teams.
Canaries were up against Greyhounds. Despite winning more ends Canaries didn’t manage to win the match.
Greyhounds were well up at halfway but the Canaries battled back. By the last end they needed two shots to tie. However they only managed one and lost 13-12.
Royals, second in the table, were given a bit of a fright by Magpies.
Royals won the first end, and then trailed Magpies until the 12th end when they edged in front, eventually winning 13-10 at the end.
