Bridgwater College Elite Men’s 2, Guernsey FA 2

BRIDGWATER College Elite Men’s team were left to rue a number of missed chances as they were held to a draw by Guernesy.

Guernsey took the first chance of the game on 20 minutes after an uncharacteristic sequence of missed tackles by Bridgwater’s back four allowed Pirelli to waltz into the penalty area and slot the ball home.

Bridgwater struck back within five minutes as Ben Robertson won the ball at right back and struck a pinpoint 20 yard pass to Ollie Chamberlain, who finished calmly.

The second half started with Bridgwater in control, but it was the visitors who struck next as Pirelli beat his marker to fire into the bottom corner.

Bridgwater responded by pushing players further forward and reverting to a back three – with newcomer George Turner replacing Robertson, and Alex Male taking over from Villis.

This immediately paid dividends as Lewis Hembury latched on to a Matt Connick cross to head the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and once again level the scores.

The final last minutes saw Bridgwater camp in Guernsey’s penalty area, but to no avail as shots were either wide or saved by an inspired visiting goalkeeper.

Jason Gunningham, head of sport and academy director for the Elite Men’s Football Development Squad, said: “We finished the game feeling rather disappointed as we see this as two points dropped as we had more than enough possession and clear cut chances at goal to have won the game comfortably.

“Aligned to the fact Guernsey had two shots at goal and scored on both occasions makes it even more galling but a very good learning experience for the players.”
