Andy and Nigel triumph in pairs' stableford
1:18pm Monday 27th January 2014 in Sport
BRISTOL-based Brean members Andy Chapple and Nigel Hodges took advantage of their shorter trip to Thornbury Golf Club, as they ran out winners in the Blinds Pairs Stableford.
Chapple had the best individual score of the day with an impressive 41 points closely followed by Roger Vaughan on 40 but it all depended on who they drew as partners to see if they had won the Trophy.
Nigel Hodges was first out the bag followed by Chapple giving them a total of 70.
Runners up were Roger Vaughan and Kevin Davies on 69 ahead of a Chris Fairchild/Hodges (making his second appearance in the draw due to uneven number of players) pairing on 68.
Mike Allen has started 2014 in great form and added his third victory of the calendar year with success in the Boycie Trophy at Burnham and Berrow.
Allen carded 36 points to take the win by four points ahead of a trio on 32.
A countback was required and youngster Ben Haines relegated Club Chairman Tony Roper to third and Jenny Vaughan to 4th thanks to his back nine score.
Trevor Pitt was fifth on 31 and the rest of the field got pretty much blown away by the storm that swept across the course later in the day.
Hardly a Seniors event goes by at the moment without Pete Douglas featuring around the top echelons of the leaderboard and he notched another victory in the Seniors Winter League competition.
When the partners were drawn out by Roy Snell and Ken Ponter and George Stratford joined Douglas they always looked likely contenders.
In the Stand Aside Scramble format they scored an impressive nett score of 62.8 over the 18 holes to record the win but the trio of Geoff Seaman, John Sherwood and Barrie Yearsley ran them close as they ended on 63.2 in the runners up position.
In the third spot a few shots behind the leaders were Roger Phillips, Len Young and Stuart Adams on 67.3.
