WELLINGTON manager Mike Hawes says the chances of this weekend’s game going ahead are in the balance as their pitch tries to recover from the recent wet weather.

On Saturday Hawes’s side is due to take on Ashton & Backwell – a team they have already lost to earlier in the season.

Wellington missed two penalties in three minutes that day and Hawes says his side will be hoping to make amends in the return fixture – if the weather allows.

Hawes said: “The game is probably 50-50 at the moment to be honest.

“There there were a couple of Western League games off on Tuesday night and one abandoned, so we will have to see.

“Ashton & Backwell beat us 1-0 last time and we managed to miss those two penalties so we’ll be keen to put things right on Saturday.

“The backlog of fixtures isn’t too bad for us at the moment. We’ve only got a couple of midweek games to play – but hopefully the break means that players can shake off any niggles they might have.”

Wellington will be boosted by the news that Simon Dennehy has returned to training after recovering from a broken leg and Hawes hopes to see him back in action before the end of the season.

Wellington saw their third Western League Division One game in four postponed due to waterlogging last weekend when the planned visit of Oldland Abbotonians was called off on the morning of the game following a pitch inspection.

Since Boxing Day, games at Wincanton and home to both Chippenham Park and Oldland Abbotonians have had to be called off and re-scheduled.

This sees the Tangerines now having to play two midweek games to make up for the loss of Saturday action with the game at Wincanton set for Tuesday, February 11.

Oldland visit the Recreation Ground on Wednesday, March 19 while Wellington entertain Chippenham on Saturday, February 22.

Wellington dropped to fourth place after the small amount of action that did take place on Saturday had been processed as Welton Rovers won 2-0 at Warminster Town to move above the Tangerines into third place.
