A MID Devon football team are to pit their skills against some of the biggest clubs in the country when they fulfil a lifetime ambition of taking part in the FA Disability Cup.

Twyford Spartans Ability Counts FC has been selected as one of only 19 clubs across the UK to enter the competition.

The players at the Tiverton-based club will now rub shoulders with other disability football clubs in the second year of the competition.

Professional clubs such as Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic – as well as current trophy holders Plymouth Argyle – will be looking to progress as far as possible in their version of the most famous cup competition.

Twyford Spartans take on Bridgend DFC from South Wales in the preliminary round of the competition – with the home tie scheduled for a 1.30pm kick off at Tiverton Towns’ Ladysmead ground on Sunday, January 26.

Club secretary Tracey Rawlings said: “All the boys are really excited by the prospect of the game. For most of them it’s the first time they’ve played 11-a-side on a big pitch and the coaches have been busy refreshing some of the rules.

“We are grateful for all the help and support that we have had along our journey – whether it be the coaches, parents, support workers – or anyone who has contributed.”

Entry to the match is free and the club are producing a souvenir programme. It will also be the team’s first time playing in their new yellow strip, sponsored by House 2 Home and A&M Carpenters.
