TIVERTON’S new club captain, John Sampson, knocked defending champion Jimmy Heard out of the club’s Winter Foursomes on Saturday.

Sampson teamed up with Dave Milton to defeat Heard and his new partner Lee Arthurs.

First round results: David Jack and Mark Davitt beat Steve Bazley and Duncan Davis; Darren Lowman and Steve Jack beat Mike Angus and Roger Norton; Mark Griffiths and Mark Woodman beat Tim Durrant and Alun Manley; Andy Bolt and Derek Cruwys beat Andy Brice and Steve Carey; Ollie and Neville Taylor beat Roger Millett and Les Hartley; Roger Stevens and Kevin Ruscoe beat Peter Boax and Dean Farmer; Dave Milton and John Sampson beat Jimmy Heard and Lee Arthurs; Simon Legassick and Les Jones beat Ian Turner and Charlie Durnan; Kevin Harper and Carl Skinner beat Shaun Vickery and Robert Mugford; Tony Allsopp and Neil Carthew beat Mike Holder and Mike Eastmond.

Duncan Floyde, Ray Pratt, Peter Anthony and Andy Ogden posted 121 Stableford points to win the four-man team event on Saturday.

Mike Cottrell, Tony Lavery, Heath Ellis and Mark Sangster finished second with 108, pipping Ollie Main, Brian Phillips, Ricky Baker and Matt Watts on a countback.

Shirley Ward carded 34 points to win the ladies’ January Stableford on Wednesday.

The 23-handicapper edged out Maureen Postles on a countback, while Marian Stevens was third on 30.

Anto Hajduk won the nine-hole competition with 16 points, two ahead of Janice Haynes.
