STEVE Mason started 2014 in the best possible way with victory in the January Medal.

His nett 65 was the best score of the day and was enough to win him the New Years Trophy as well as the Division Two award.

After a steady start, his round ignited with a spectacular eagle two at the eighth, swiftly followed by a brace of threes at the next two holes, the latter being another birdie.

He ended the day just one shot clear of his nearest challengers in Club Champion Dan Broom - whose nett 66 gave him Division One success - and Ron Vine, who had to settle for runners up spot behind Mason.

The top flight of players again produced some excellent scoring with Paul McLanaghan taking second spot on 67 ahead of a quartet of golfers on 68.

The third tier of players had an additional prize to play for in the Deacon Trophy and this was won by Simon Baunton.

Sunday’s Winter League round was a race against the weather with the forecast of heavy rain putting many off.

As is often the case of late, the rain wasn’t anywhere near as bad as the weather forecasters predicted but still not many lasted the full circuit of the course.

Richard Triscott was one of the few and led the score charts with 34 points and with it moved to the top of the points qualifying table.

Bob Masterman was second with 31 points just edging out his playing partner Gordy Wheelaghan by a single point for the runners up prize.

KEVIN Davies ended the year on a high as he won the running Stableford Christmas Open over the festive period.

He handed in an excellent score of 47 points despite not getting any advantage of any larger temporary green holes which were deployed in parts on some for the wetter/frostier days.

Not surprisingly his handicap was heavily reduced thanks to his winning round and he now enters 2014 playing off of 16, his lowest handicap to date.

In second place was the leading score from Sunday's play as Chris Stephens fended off the challenge of Craig Wheelaghan and Steve Foy thanks to a count-back after they all had 41 points.

Wheelaghan then relegated Foy into fourth position with the better back nine score.
