Tribute Somerset 2
Morganians 15, Wyvern 12

MORGANIANS ground out a tough result against third-placed Wyvern on Saturday after a scrappy game, not helped by the extremely boggy pitch.

Morgs got underway on the front foot and put a lot of pressure on the Wyvern forwards, driving them back for fun.

Their pressure was rewarded after Josh Luke scored a try off the back of a scrum, this only the start of a fantastic performance for him. Will Hopkins added the extras.

Wyvern quickly closed the gap after pinning Morgs in their 22m area for a while, they profited after a kick to clear was charged down and they dived on the bouncing ball, leaving the score at 7-5.

Morganians did go into half time with a slightly bigger lead after Will Hopkins scored from a neat offload form Royston Grimstead, who broke from the back of a ruck, after constant pressure from the Morgs forwards who had gained them plenty of ground to put them in a scoring position.

The second half carried on in the same way with both teams battering each other and closing all space for both fly-halves, leading to most of the game being played in the middle third of the pitch.

Wyvern did draw level on the 60-minute mark after good work by their forwards led to them powering through the scrambling Morganians defence.

Will Hopkins added what turned out to be the winning points of the game, with a penalty just outside the Wyvern 22.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing as Hopkins was then sin-binned, leaving the team to battle on and secure the result for the final 10 minutes.

l On Boxing Day there is a charity rugby match being played at Morganians, with kick-off at 1pm – open to anyone to come down.
