Joy as Bridgwater triumph in hockey derby with Taunton Vale
12:00pm Tuesday 5th November 2013 in Sport
Bridgwater Men 1st 4, Taunton Vale 2nd 0
BRIDGWATER triumphed in the local derby on a windy day at Chilton Stadium.
They started well, creating two chances which were cleared off the line by former player Richard Gower.
At the other end, goalkeeper Pete Saunders was on top form making a couple crucial smothering saves and Nath Dyte cleared one off the line to keep the scores level.
However, a quick free hit taken by Matt Upham found Duncan Morrish wide on the right hand side; his strong run into the Taunton Vale D found Upham who continued his forward run to sweep the ball into the back of the net for 1-0 at half time to the home side.
Although they were in control of the game, Bridgwater were always vulnerable to the counter-attack. Taunton Vale almost found an equaliser but Upham and Dyte repelled several attacks, ably supported by Harry Stephenson and Rob Morrish.
With 15 minutes to go, Bridgwater suddenly found their golden touch in front of goal in a hectic five minutes thanks to Matt Slocombe, Martin James and Carwyn Jenkins.
With just under ten minutes to go, Bridgwater found themselves a man down but the game was all but over.
Man of the match: Martin James.
Bridgwater Men 4th 7, OPM 3rd 6th 1
THE fourth string overcame a tricky first half to run out comfortable winners against OPM.
Bridgwater took the lead midway through the first half when Jordan Rawles reacted first to a loose ball; however, the lead lasted less than five minutes as OPM broke away once again to draw level.
The lead was restored shortly before half-time when Steve Pigden converted Kody Fludgate's pass Bridgwater started the second half strongly and Mike Davidge’s powerful shot extended their lead before Pigden scored his second.
By now Bridgwater were in control, with Ben Lewis, Steve Wilson and Joe Syvret dominating the midfield, Rawles added a fifth.
Fludgate's fine all round game was rewarded with Bridgwater's sixth goal, before Billy Vickery completed the scoring with the best goal of the game.
Man of the match: Ben Lewis.
Bridgwater Men 5th 1, East Devon 5th 2
AFTER nearly nicking a point against East Devon 4th team last week, Bridgwater were confident of a positive result.
However, the team started poorly with the away side taking the game to Bridgwater.
Against the run of play, Bridgwater nearly took the lead through Ben Squires, but the short corner didn't leave the D so the goal was disallowed.
East Devon showed their strength, and they scored two quick goals to take the lead.
Dave Dosson pulled one back from four yards but it was too little too late for Bridgwater.
Man of the match: Simon Brewer.
Bridgwater Ladies 1st/2nd 6, Minehead 1
A COMBINED 1st and 2nd Bridgwater Ladies team came out on top in this friendly.
The ladies soon found the goal through Katie England, followed quickly by another from Lorraine Hollidge.
A third before half time came when Lucy Burridge weaved her way into the circle and her pass was finished by Kath Briggs.
Millie Burridge kept the Minehead defence busy and scored a top drawer goal from the edge of the D into the top corner.
Captain Charlie Lewis was next on the scoresheet and the sixth goal, a second for Hollidge, came from a short corner.
Minehead got a consolation goal late in the game but had rarely troubled the Bridgwater defence.
Player of the match: Millie Burridge.
