'Disappointing' Berrow crash out of the cup
1:00pm Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in Sport
Langford Rovers 2000 2 Berrow 1
BERROW crashed out of the league cup with a disappointing display against bogey-side, Langford.
Missing the injured Jeff Read and unavailable Harry Penfold, Berrow never got out of second gear against an experienced home side and paid the penalty. Berrow barely attempted to play any passing football, instead opting to hit long balls on a small pitch with the wind at their backs - never really troubling the home defence who didn’t look the strongest.
After Jason Kilduff had gone close and Jack Taylor had a cross shot well saved, Langford opened the scoring with their first real attack, when Berrow gave the ball away.
A poor attempt at a tackle left the home striker in on goal. He unselfishly played in a team mate to give Nick Slack no chance from eight yards.
Berrow though, equalised immediately.
Taylor was put through by Dave Keirle to round the keeper and score.
It could have been two, minutes later but for a dubious flag from the linesman with Taylor again through.
Berrow played passing football for the final five minutes of the half and could have taken the lead, but Keirle’s lob drifted over. Berrow started the second-half well, with Keirle hitting the bar and Kilduff putting the rebound wide.
But a free-kick led to the home side getting the winner, when poor defending led to a goal mouth scramble and the ball was eventually forced over the line.
Despite having the majority off the ball, Berrow were not passing it well and were making basic mistakes.
Taylor was causing problems and he set up Scott Lismore, but his shot was well saved.
Pete John, Ellis Harper and Dax Vincent replaced Phil Hartnup, Kilduff and Keirle, but the home side held on to progress to the next round.
