CYCLING: Wheelers hold annual hill climb championships
5:00pm Friday 18th October 2013 in Sport
A DAMP and misty morning saw the running of 1st Chard Wheelers annual hill climb championships at Yarcombe.
The climb proved as tough as ever but many great times were recorded and competition was fierce.
George Fowler continued his superb run of form with a tremendous ride but was closely pursued by Under-16 Jacob Board and Veteran Rex Facey who was third.
Facey, who has won this event on several occasions and is the course record holder, kept the pressure on the youngsters at all times.
Fowler, who threw everything at the race, said: “I know the grass opposite Hilltop garage is soft and comfy as I lay there for ten minutes recovering... I knew Jacob would push me all the way.”
In the overall standings Justin Dance claimed fourth. Andy Mapson, last year’s club Hill Climb champion, was joint fifth with Ivan Jordan.
Toby Gilmore was second placed Veteran behind Facey with Gavin Richards third and Sean Hogg fourth. In the SuperVets category Dave Moran produced a very brisk climb to take the title.
Wiebke Rietz topped the Ladies list and continued her hill climbing success.
Dixie Jordan was second female and was also top Youth Girl. Board took the Under 16 category from Adrian Lane and top Under 14 was Joe West.
Competition was high in the Under 12s with Rowan Ellis taking victory from Evan Richards and Joe Smith.
A club spokesman said: “1st Chard Wheelers would like to thank the residents of Yarcombe and any passing motorists for their courteous and considerate conduct on Sunday morning.”
The Regional School of Racing starts on Saturday at Newport velodrome with three ‘Wheelers’ invited to take part.
Ruby Bond, Ryan White and Emily Attfield will be put through their paces on the track in a four hour intensive coaching/ riding session.
