CYCLING: Rietz thrilled with Porlock hill time trial
6:30pm Monday 30th September 2013 in Sport
WIEBKE Rietz, of the 1st Chard Wheelers was delighted with a brilliant second place in the Ladies event in the Porlock Toll Road hill climb race on Sunday.
The race, which is an individually timed time trial, climbs the height of Porlock hill over the four mile long toll road.
Rietz, who is the only elite female rider in the South-West, rode very strongly to record an excellent time and was only beaten by Olympian and former world champion Wendy Houvanaghal.
Rietz, who praised club coach Gary Larsen for his training input, help and advice, said: “I’m very pleased ... well thrilled to bits actually.”
Another Wheeler in top form at the weekend was George Fowler who took part in the Purbeck two day stage race based at Wareham in Dorset.
The combined time over both stages decides the overall results and Fowler featured prominently in them.
In the 50 mile first stage on Saturday he rode strongly and got a solid result towards the front of the bunch.
Sunday saw him take an excellent sixth place in the second stage even though he was racing against higher-level riders.
That gave him a very commendable 12th place over the whole event and third in the 3rd category classification.
Bearing in mind this was only Fowler’s fifth race, his rise has been meteoric and many more top results surely await the young man from Chard. He also celebrated his 21st birthday while at the Purbeck race.
The club’s cyclo-cross coaching sessions start on Saturday, October 12 at Chardstock School and are open to all riders old and new. For details contact Brandon Ellis on 01460-221479.
