GOLF: Carthew claims Chairman's Cup at Tiverton

FORMER club captain Neil Carthew shot a five-under nett 66 to win a three-way tie at the top for the Chairman’s Cup at Tiverton.
Carthew had his handicap cut from 16 to 14 after winning on a countback from Shaun Vickery and junior Sam Heard.
Carthew birdied the toughest two holes – the 7th and 11th – and held on despite double bogey sixes on the 16th and 17th.
Vickery also tamed a difficult hole by having an eagle two on the 8th.
Results: 1 Neil Carthew (82-16=66); 2 Shaun Vickery (80-14=66); 3 Sam Heard (77-11=66); 4 Ian Budden (84-17=67); 5 Alan Cooper (85-18=67); 6 Norman Ford (81-14=67); 7 Nick Lear (86-18=68); 8 Jay Scott (86-18=68); 9 Cliff Hagley (86-18=68); 10 David Simpson (86-18=68).
Dale Flint, Tony Wood-Wright and Will Roberts all scored 39 points to lead the way in the men’s September Weekday Stableford.
Flint, a 10-handicapper who had a two on the 4th, pipped Kim Garnsworthy and Mike Blackmore by one in Division One.
John Seamer posted 38 to take third place in Division Two, behind Wood-Wright and Roberts.

Annette Cardwell, Xanda Vass and Chris Coombes fired four-under nett 70s to top the leaderboard in the ladies’ Autumn Meeting.
Cardwell had her handicap cut from 21 to 20 after finishing two ahead of Maggie Knowlman in Bronze Division One.
Vass and Coombes also reduced their handicaps, from 31 to 29 and from 31 to 30 respectively, after beating Julia Cole by one in Bronze Division Two.
Jo Lloyd-Davies claimed the Silver Division prize with 71, edging out Marian Stevens on a countback.
Four trophies were handed out after the event, as the scores were combined with those in the Spring Meeting.
Teresa Birchmore secured the Scratch Challenge Bowl, for the best gross score, with rounds of 91 and 92 for a total of 183.
Stevens came second with 184 after scores of 95 and 89.
The Bronze Scratch Cup, for the best gross score in the Bronze Division, went to ladies’ captain Anto Hajduk with rounds of 97 and 93 for an aggregate of 190.
Oki Northwood was the runner-up on 193 after cards of 99 and 94.
Jan Cruse lifted the Pertwee Cup, for the best nett score in all divisions, after shooting rounds of 67 and 73 for an eight-under total of 140. Stevens picked up another second place with scores of 78 and 71, which gave her an aggregate of 149.
But she did get her hands on silverware as her 149 total earned her the Kyle Trophy, for the best nett score by a lady veteran.
Hajduk was the runner-up on a countback as she scored 76 and 73.
