TENNIS: Taunton School's Edward Shattock claims another title
5:00pm Saturday 14th September 2013 in Sport
TAUNTON School student Edward Shattock has been crowned Somerset County singles’ champion for the sixth consecutive year.
He won the 14 and under title – despite playing boys a year older than himself – without dropping a set.
And there was another local winner when Louis Skupien from Wellington claimed the 12 and under title.
Shattock was up against a very strong field which mainly consisted of the Somerset County Cup squad and several boys from Millfield.
He was the No.1 seed and, after a first round bye, beat Reece Munston from Queen’s College 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.
Shattock followed this up with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Millfield’s Matthew Crofts in the semifinals before defeating second seed Tristan Coore of Queens’s 7-5, 6-1 in the final.
During the summer holidays Shattock also won tournaments in Leicester, Northampton, Milton Keynes and Great Malvern and came second in Cirencester and Cardiff.
He is currently ranked 93rd in Great Britain at 14 and under and 50th at 13 and under.
Skupien successfully navigated the draw by beating second seed Matthew Crofts 6-4, 6-2 in the semi-finals and Oliver Monteiro 6-3, 6-0 in the final.
Skupien, who visited Wimbledon earlier in the year as part of the South West Performance squad, was also in action again in the boys’ 14-andunder event.
He was beaten in the quarter finals by Tristan Coore – the boy beaten by Shattock in the final.
The championships were held at Taunton Tennis Club.
