THE BIG MATCH - Red Tile put eight past depleted Maltshovel
12:29pm Monday 9th September 2013 in Sport
Bill Brown Cup Group A
Maltshovel 1-8 Red Tile
CRAIG Shant bagged a hat trick for Red Tile as they thrashed Maltshovel 8-1 on Sunday morning.
Brad Hayes (2), Jason McPheat, Jack Taylor and an own goal completed the scoring for Red Tile in a very one-sided affair.
Red Tile manager Andy Staunton was delighted with his side’s performance and is hoping to build on the result. He said: “Our squad today defined the efforts made during the summer, with top scorer from last season Jack Taylor sat on the bench.
“Obviously delighted with the result, however it must be noted Maltshovel were clearly under strength, but we can only play what’s in front of us.
“The performance from Tile was solid from start to finish, I couldn’t have wished for a start like that being 3-0 up after only 16 minutes and leading 5-0 at half time.”
This was a one-sided contest from start to finish, with Red Tile racing into three goal lead with just 16 minutes on the clock.
And it got a lot worse for Maltshovel from here as two more first-half goals made it 5-0 to the visitors at the break.
Craig Shant completed his hat trick minutes into the second-half to make it six, but the hosts pulled one back through a Jack Reed penalty.
The second half was more evenly contested, but Red Tile increased their lead to eight with Jason McPheat and Jack Taylor.
Maltshovel boss Piers Govier was obviously disappointed with the result, but felt the score line was a little unfair. He said: “Having to play without a regular keeper, and being disrupted by injuries and unavailability, and a lot of poor decision making was our downfall.
“We gave it our best and had chances to score a few more, but I think the result flattered Red Tile.
“It’s only the group stages so not all is lost; the cup is never won winning one game.”
